Emmanuel Abayisenga,a rwandan responsible for the fire at Nantes Cathedral, sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of Father Olivier Maire

The Vendée Assize Court sentenced Emmanuel Abayisenga on Thursday, January 22, 2026, to 30 years of criminal imprisonment for the murder of Father Olivier Maire, which occurred in August 2021. The defendant had previously been convicted for the arson attack on Nantes Cathedral in 2020.

As provincial superior of the Montfort Missionaries, Father Olivier Maire, aged 60, had welcomed Emmanuel Abayisenga into his religious community after his release under judicial supervision. The priest was known for his pastoral commitment and his faithfulness to Christian values of charity and forgiveness.

The events took place during the night of August 8–9, 2021, in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre. According to the autopsy, the priest died as a result of violent blows to the head. The day after the crime, the accused voluntarily reported himself to the gendarmerie.

During the trial, the public prosecutor sought a sentence of life imprisonment. The court ultimately imposed a 30-year prison sentence, rejecting the claim of diminished responsibility put forward by some psychiatric experts.

Already sentenced in 2023 to four years in prison for the arson of Nantes Cathedral—an attack that notably destroyed the cathedral’s grand organ—Emmanuel Abayisenga had been accommodated by the religious community upon his release from detention.

At the opening of the hearing, the 45-year-old defendant refused to state his identity orally, requesting in writing to exercise his right to remain silent.
Please respect my right to remain silent. I do not need an interpreter or a lawyer,” he wrote to the presiding judge, Anne Haye.

According to Me Antoine de Guerry de Beauregard, lawyer for the Montfort congregation and a civil party to the case, this silence came as no surprise:
We expected it, since on previous occasions when he was summoned, he refused to speak,” he said on the sidelines of the hearing.

Father Olivier Maire’s body was found covered in blood in the building where both men were staying. The case caused strong public emotion in France, particularly within the Catholic Church.

this conviction raises profound questions about the failures of the judicial system and the support mechanisms for individuals under judicial supervision. How can one understand that a man already convicted for setting fire to a place of worship was able to commit such a crime against the very person who had offered him shelter, help, and protection, in the name of forgiveness and Christian charity?
