His name is  Axel Rudakubana. He is the 18-year-old child killer who was today sentenced to 13 life sentences with a minimum term of 52 years, in what’s believed to be the longest punishment handed down to a killer of his age.

On July 29, 2024, Rudakubana stormed a Taylor Swiftthemed dance class at The Hart Space, wielding a knife he’d purchased on Amazon. Three little girls, Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine; Bebe King, six; and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were murdered in the heinous attack, while 10 survivors were left injured and severely traumatised.

Sentencing the merciless killer, Mr Justice Goose said:

“In just 15 minutes, Rudakubana murdered three children and attempted to murder eight other children and two adults. He was prevented from murdering more only by the escape of other children. He will serve almost the whole of his life in custody. I consider it likely he will never be released, and he will be in custody for all of his life.”

Rudakubana has shown no remorse since committing the horrific attack. On the contrary, he even bragged about his murders to police. Showing his cowardice in court, he refused to speak when addressed and always wore a mask, or covered his face with his hoodie. The teen’s sick disrespect was in stark contrast to the unbelievable bravery shown by victims and their families, who gave powerful testimony in court.

Shocking gloat

Rudakubana mostly remained silent during police interviews, but he took sick pleasure in bragging about his lack of remorse. During a chilling interaction with officers, the killer declared “I’m glad they’re dead,” adding “I’m neutral, I don’t care”.

Senior Investigating Officer, Det Chief Insp Jason Pye, said: “He didn’t speak in interviews, but he did make remarks to individuals. We have informed the families about them, they are horrible. It just shows he has absolutely no remorse whatsoever.”

Cruel smirk

In another cruel blow to the families destroyed by his frenzied violence, Rudakubana smiled in court when he was charged with the three murders, just a few days after his killing spree. He wore a “broad smile” when he entered the courtroom before covering his face with his sweatshirt for the remainder of the proceedings. And earlier this week, Daily Express writer Chris Riches spoke of the “chill” he felt upon observing Rudakubana’s cruel smirk. Mr Riches, who was among the first reporters to see evil Rudakubana face-to-face, recalled: “I stared into the eyes of serial child killer Axel Rudakubana – and his twisted, manic smile will never leave me.”

“But his chilling air of amusement as he smirked was nothing to the look he gave me as he turned to peek at the reporters from behind the thick, glass-panelled dock of Court 3.6. To Rudakubana the whole morning’s legal proceedings were amusing – maybe a nervous grin – but a broad smile lit up his face as he looked at me and my colleagues.
“To Rudakubana, the whole morning’s legal proceedings were amusing – maybe a nervous grin – but a broad smile lit up his face as he looked at me and my colleagues. It was an unnerving smile of a 17-year-old boy who did not care, and was capable of anything. All of us were taken aback.”

Last-minute attempt to ‘save his own skin’

In a shock U-turn, Rudakubana changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial on Monday. The killer pleaded guilty to the murders of Alice, Bebe, and Elsie in what has been interpreted as a cynical bid to get a lesser sentence.

Rudakubana also pleaded guilty to eight counts of attempted murder in relation to eight other children, who cannot be named, as well as the attempted murders of Leanne Lucas and Jonathan Hayes. He also confessed to the possession of a bladed article in a public place, namely a kitchen knife with a curved blade, and pleaded guilty to production of a biological toxin, namely ricin, and to possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, namely a PDF file entitled “Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants: The Al-Qaeda Training Manual”.

Seated with his head nearly touching his knees, Rudakubana mumbled “guilty” to each of the 16 counts on the indictment. This unexpected change of plea, which came as a surprise to the judge, lawyers and press alike, meant the loved ones of Rudakubana’s young victims were not present in court to hear the child murderer confess his guilt. Deanna Heer KC, prosecuting, confirmed families were not in attendance as it was expected the trial would open on Tuesday, January 21.

There had been no indication that Rudakubana would change his plea. The hearing, expected to deal with legal matters at the beginning of a four-week trial, was instead over and done with in just over 15 minutes. Addressing the court after the pleas were entered, Justice Goose said: “I am conscious of the fact the families are not here today. You have now pleaded guilty to this indictment and to each of the charges upon it.”

One parent of a Southport stabbing survivor, who shared how his child is still struggling ‘mentally’, believes Rudakubana “only changed his plea in the hope of getting a reduction in his sentence”. The father, whose child required surgery in the aftermath of the attack, told The Sun: “He only changed his plea in the hope of getting a reduction in his sentence. It was to try to save his own skin.”

Cruel silence

Clad in a grey tracksuit and surgical mask on the first day of his trial, Rudakubana immediately sat in the dock, where he was accompanied by an intermediary, and placed his head down onto his knees.

While entering his guilty plea, Rudakubana originally remained seated when asked to stand. He also remained silent when asked to give his name. After officers confirmed proceedings could be heard in the dock, Rudakubana was asked to speak his name again but again remained silent. Stanley Reiz KC, defending, said:

“The defendant hasn’t identified himself, but there isn’t any dispute that the man in the dock is Axel Rudakubana, and he can hear what’s being said.” Mr Justice Goose asked: “He’s not choosing to speak?”, to which Mr Reiz replied: “That’s correct.” He then enquired if the indictments could be repeated – when Rudakubana finally entered his guilty pleas.

Court outburst

Rudakubana caused disruption and delay at his own sentencing today, resulting in shouts of “coward” from an anguished family member. Turning to a dock office as the opening note was read, Rudakubana said: “I’m not fine, I feel ill.” He then repeatedly shouted: “I need to speak to a paramedic, I feel ill”, adding: “You’re not giving me any support judge, I feel ill.”

The judge, Mr Justice Goose, ordered the Southport killer to leave the dock as he shouted repeatedly during the sentencing hearing at Liverpool Crown Court. One family member was heard to call out “coward” as Rudakubana left the room while other relatives were seen shaking their heads.

Rudakubana had been shouting: “It’s not my fault, I feel ill”. When the judge attempted to continue with the case, Rudakubana also shouted: “Don’t continue.” It was then that he was instructed to leave the dock. Mr Justice Goose told the court that the defendant would be brought back in to be sentenced later on in the day, and the prosecution opening continued in his absence.

After returning to the dock as his sentencing hearing resumed following a lunchtime break, Rudakubana looked briefly around the court before dropping his head to his lap. Distraught victims and families bravely sat through harrowing evidence while the killer was permitted to leave the room.

Before he entered the courtroom again, Mr Justice Goose said: “I understand the defendant has actually been seen again and found to be fit, physically, to come into court for the moment; he continues to indicate that were he to do so, he would disrupt proceedings.”

Stan Reiz KC, defending, stated that the defendant was willing to come into court and understood it was important not to disrupt proceedings, adding that the situation may change. Mr Justice Goose replied: “If they do, I’ll remove him, but I will want him to come into court at the point of sentence.” Remaining silent, Rudakubana continued looking at the floor as Deanna Heer KC continued outlining the case.

Survivor’s harrowing question to coward

A 14-year-old girl who survived the knife attack and who cannot be named for legal reasons told the court how the “day turned into a living nightmare”. In a statement read via video link, the girl said:

“The beginning of my nightmare started when I saw you. I thought you were playing a joke. I saw you in your green hoody and face mask. The thing I remember most about you is your eyes. You didn’t look human, you looked possessed. I watched you stab someone, and then I saw you coming for me. It was like slow motion. You stabbed me in the arm, and instinctively, I turned, and that’s when you continued to stab me in the back, although I didn’t feel it at the time. All I could hear was the screams.I was so scared of what you were doing, and I was in a blind panic. I ran out onto the landing, and there was a group of girls huddled, and I began just screaming for the girls to get down the stairs. I remember I was physically pushing them down the stairs to get them out of the building and get away from you. I knew I was running for my life. I needed to try to get everyone out and to safety – that was my first thought.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the terrifying ordeal, the girl showed emotion as she continued:

“Physically, I’ve healed, but my scars remain as a reminder of what you did to me, to us all. No sane person could do that. It’s sickening what you did, going in there knowing you’re going into a room full of defenceless children. Give me a reason for what you did. Arming yourself with a weapon and stabbing children. I hope you spend the rest of your life knowing we think you’re a coward.”

Grieving mother’s damning statement

Jenny Stancombe, the mother of seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, described her daughter’s murder as the “act of a coward” in a statement made at Rudakubana’s sentencing hearing. Addressing Rudakubana directly, Jenny stated: “What you did was not only cruel and pure evil; it was the act of a coward.”
