Does Mützig and Other Beers Really Contain Food?

HAKIZIMANA Maurice

Someone recently claimed in public that Mützig contains food. But is that really true? Can we honestly say that beer contains “food”? And if so, does it provide a balanced diet? Could someone live on Mützig or other beer alone and remain healthy?

The Nutrients Found in Beer

All beers—including Mützig—are brewed from cereals such as barley, sorghum, wheat, or other grains, together with hops, water, and yeast. These ingredients are, of course, foods. As a result, beer contains small amounts of nutrients, including: Residual carbohydrates (sugars),Proteins and amino acids (mainly from the grains),Small amounts of B vitamins, especially in less heavily filtered beers and Minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Surprisingly, alcohol itself also provides energy. It contains about 7 kilocalories (kcal) per gram, making it a source of calories, although it is not considered an essential nutrient.

So yes, in that sense, Mützig or other beer does contain nutrients.

But Beer Is Not a Balanced Diet

Don’t be misled into thinking that you can live on beer alone.Your body needs a balanced diet to stay healthy. Eat a variety of nutritious foods whenever they are available.

A healthy diet should include:

(1)Energy-giving foods such as cereals, potatoes, rice, cassava, and other starchy foods.

(2)Body-building foods such as meat, fish, eggs, beans, and other protein-rich foods.

(3)Protective foods such as fruits and vegetables, which provide vitamins and help protect against disease.

Also remember to get enough rest, drink plenty of water, and exercise regularly.

Conclusion

So, no, you cannot live on Mützig (beer) alone and expect to stay healthy. Although beer contains some nutrients and calories, it cannot replace a balanced diet.

Class dismissed! Questions?
