MY OPINION: ARE RELIGIONS USELESS?

Prof HAKIZIMANA Maurice

Recently, there have been many debates around religions, especially in Rwanda (as a concrete example). President Paul Kagame has often stated that, in his view, all religions could even disappear or be banned since they serve no purpose. That is his personal opinion. In Rwanda, many religions and churches have been closed, and others could be closed in the coming days. Many people claim that religions are useless, that they are nothing but deception and fraud, even a form of colonization. The current trend is to condemn religions in Africa and, if necessary, to expel them entirely. As for me, what do I think? Are religions really useless? In this short text, I give you my point of view.

In Rwanda, the State has closed churches, mosques, chapels, Kingdom Halls, and houses of prayer altogether—around 5,600 places! What is the real main reason for this?

I. First Reflection

I too openly admit that the religions of this world do not truly lead people to God! There is no longer (or perhaps there never really was) genuine spirituality coming from these churches.

The history of the Church, Islam, Protestant religions, and others has long been marked—right up to recent times—by bloody wars, terrorism, the so-called holy wars to expand territories, complicity in slavery, colonization, and the oppression of populations! We also find quarrels, betrayals, witchcraft, the struggle for honors, the stealing of offerings, involvement in genocides, political manipulation, and racism!

Also to read: Lucifer: Who is he? Many say he is Satan.I disagree! Let me explain it to you.

There is also the problem of sects that deceive people, lead them into mental disorders, make them hate themselves, reject life and their families, sacrifice their own children, and fall into madness.

To read: “Sodom,” the book that lifts the veil on homosexuality in the Catholic Church.

Also to read: Galileo-Wrongly condemned by the Church

As for teaching the truth, God, and the Gospel, honestly, I would give them a score of 3/20! All of them! Some would even deserve 0!! 😂 I had already written an article entitled:Religion: They caused the death of their three year old child so he could be “born again”! Even the Bible itself tells them:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons, and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
(Matthew 7:21–23)

II. Second Reflection

BUT, let us be honest: even if they have failed in spirituality and in the things of God, at least they have carried out very concrete works here on earth that have nothing to do with God but are very important in our shared lives—helping people in daily life, education, healthcare, aid and assistance to the poor, paying school fees for children, and many other things!

Historically, it was mainly Catholic missionaries who awakened an ignorant, illiterate population, enabled it to read and write, opened it to the world, made it aware of its rights, and encouraged it to fight for them!

In terms of education, for example, who can deny that almost 100% of the very first schools belonged to the Church, Islam, the Adventists, the Protestants, and other small denominations?

Among those who are now over 40 years old, who can honestly say that the religions they know have been of no use to them in daily life? Apart from political propaganda, who would dare dismiss all the positive actions of religions in the country with a wave of the hand?

Personal example: As for me, apart from two public primary schools I attended, all the other schools where I studied—three secondary schools, two universities—and even my current job as a teacher were/are connected to the Catholic Church! I have very rarely been treated in public hospitals; most of my medical care was provided by religious institutions: Islamic, Pentecostal, Anglican, and others!

In short, before condemning everything called “religion” as a whole, you should first remember to whom you (or your parents) owe the fact that you know how to read and write, that you wear clean clothes on Sundays (in rural areas) or on Fridays (among Muslims), that you receive medical care and vaccinations, that people with disabilities are taken care of (I am thinking here of Father Filepo of Gatagara), that you received boarding-school education where we learned discipline, politeness, cleanliness, and morality, where we learned French, Latin, English, and many other things!

Do you have such a short memory?
Or am I the one who is mistaken? 🎤🎤🎤

Have a good end of the day, everyone! 👋👋👋

On the photo: Here is the school where I did my very first year of secondary education: Collège Saint André de Nyamirambo. To all those with whom I studied there and all who gained knowledge there, I warmly greet you!
