Hotels: What are hotel star ratings used for?

In my previous article, entitled What are the seat classes on airplanes? I explained the four types of seats available on airplanes, namely economy class, premium economy class, business class and first class.

Today, I’m going to answer those who have asked me questions about hotels and their star ratings. Five-star hotels, two-star hotels, etc. What do these stars mean? What criteria are they based on? Can a five-star hotel lose one or two stars and be downgraded? Enjoy!

I. The stars constitute a classification system, similar to military ranks.

A hotel’s star rating indicates its quality based on the services offered. This rating system ranges from 1 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the comfort (customer service), the services (number of services offered), and the amenities. Each additional star represents added value. In short, stars serve to indicate the level of comfort, services, and quality of a hotel.Let me now briefly and simply explain each star and its characteristics.

II. Quick meaning of hotel stars

1 star: very basic accommodation

⭐⭐ 2 stars: moderate comfort

⭐⭐⭐ 3 stars: good comfort and good services

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars: high comfort and premium services

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars: luxury, excellence, personalized services

III.On what basis are the stars given?

It is important to know that star ratings are valid for 5 years, after which the hotel is reassessed. If inspectors observe a change in rating, stars are added or removed. Sometimes, hotel owners themselves, after expanding and improving their establishment, request an upgrade (an additional star). Depending on its rating, a hotel may start with the maximum score (5 stars) but lose it after 5 years if necessary. In France where I am, the official organization Atout France classifies hotels according to more than 240 criteria, grouped into 3 main categories:

  • Room size
  • Bed quality
  • Private bathroom
  • Air conditioning
  • Soundproofing

2️⃣ Facilities

  • Elevator
  • Wi-Fi
  • Television
  • Parking
  • Swimming pool, spa, gym (for higher categories)

3️⃣ Quality of service

  • 24-hour reception
  • Multilingual staff
  • Daily housekeeping
  • Room service
  • Restaurant service

IV. Every hotel must have at least six structures.

Tourism expert David W. Howell believes that at least six structures should be present in every hotel.

  • Administration: Each hotel must have a manager, an assistant manager, accountants, human resources managers, and a marketing manager.
  • Reception: The reception staff is the first point of contact for guests upon arrival. They welcome them, assist them with their luggage, and provide them with various information about the hotel.
  • Housekeeping: This department plays a vital role as it ensures the cleanliness of the hotel, guest rooms, and common areas.
  • Food and Beverage: As food and beverage is the core of the hotel business, this department employs the largest number of people, representing more than half of the total staff.
  • Maintenance: The staff in this department rarely interact with guests. Their role is to ensure the smooth operation of the hotel in the event of a technical problem.
  • Security: Security personnel are responsible for protecting guests’ belongings, their safety, and the safety of the establishment.
