We are in Birmingham, UK: married couple Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah have been found guilty of causing the death of their three-year-old son Abiyah. The parents kept the child’s body in their bed for an eight-day ritual, then secretly embalmed and buried him in their garden, reports Le Parisien. The parents’ particular religious beliefs imposed on their child are the major cause, including a restrictive vegan diet and an attachment to natural and holistic medicine, going so far as to refuse medical help despite his critical health condition. They say they genuinely believed their son could be “reborn” after an eight-day ritual.(Sky News)

Abiyah died after contracting a respiratory illness, but his general condition was already seriously compromised. The child suffered from multiple fractures, severe malnutrition, rickets, anaemia, stunted growth and severe dental caries. Post-mortem examinations revealed that he had six fractures to his arms, legs and ribs. The exact cause of his death could not be determined due to the state of decomposition of the body.

Eight-day ritual

Parents Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah kept their son’s body in their bed for eight days, before mummifying him and burying him in a 80cm-deep grave in their garden. The couple, who said they lived “off the grid” and had renounced their British citizenship, were motivated by very specific beliefs, including a restrictive vegan diet and a dedication to natural and holistic medicine. They said they genuinely believed their son would be “reborn” after the ritual.

The trial, held at Coventry Crown Court, heard that Tai, a graduate in medical genetics, devised an “eight-day ritual” before carrying out the embalming. The couple said they buried the child in the hope of his “rebirth” rather than hiding his death.

The defense emphasized the parents’ sincerity in their beliefs, arguing that, in their opinion, their lifestyle and their belief in alternative medicines were the best ways to preserve their child’s health.

“Zealous in their beliefs”

However, this move was interpreted by prosecutor Jonas Hankin as evidence of the extremism of their beliefs. He said they were not stupid, but “zealous in their beliefs.” At trial, it was revealed that Tai, who had developed this belief system inspired by Igbo culture (a Nigerian ethnic group), had also adapted elements of that culture to create what he called the “refined law.” The couple had even lived in a shipping container at one point, seeking to escape traditional social norms.

Inspector Joe Davenport, who led the investigation, described Tai as “arrogant, capricious and manipulative,” while Naiyahmi was described as “incredibly weak-minded,” willing to blindly follow her husband to the detriment of their child. The couple were arrested in December 2022, in Glastonbury, five days before Abiyah’s body was found.

The court’s verdict was final: Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah were unanimously convicted of causing the death of their child.
