I Lost My Husband Because of Pride

Prof HAKIZIMANA Maurice

My husband and I had a small argument one Tuesday morning as we were getting ready to go to work. He complained about the way I had cut the bread—saying it was messy and “not presentable.”
His words hit me like a slap in the face.

If I had known what would happen afterward, I would have simply laughed and prepared another slice. But life doesn’t warn you… it just happens. I was hurt by the tone he used, so I pushed my plate away and left for work without eating. I walked out of the house without saying goodbye to him.

We were both angry, and neither of us wanted to swallow our pride first. That evening, we came home… silent. We ate in silence. We slept back to back, refusing to touch each other. Wednesday passed. Thursday passed. Same cold war. Same stubborn silence. On Thursday evening, while serving dinner, he murmured a small “good evening.” I heard it… and my heart softened… but I let my pride answer in my place. I ignored him and kept eating.

He had always been a handsome man—the kind whose gentle smile could calm a storm. But I didn’t want to “give in,” so every time he smiled softly at me, I found an excuse to walk away. I told myself, “If this argument is going to end, he’s the one who should apologize. I won’t let his smile make me surrender.” Later that night, he went to take a shower, and I heard him humming our favorite love song. If we hadn’t been angry, I would have joined him as we always did—one voice, one harmony. But my pride stole that moment from me too.

He came out of the bathroom and found me already pretending to be asleep. Around 2:50 a.m., I felt him gently tapping me, trying to wake me up. I pushed his hand away, thinking he just wanted affection. I didn’t know… that it was the last time I would ever feel his touch.

At 6:45 a.m., my alarm went off. I hurried to get ready for work. He was still sleeping—or so I thought. I didn’t even look at him properly. Pride kept my mouth shut… so I left without a word.

When I returned around 7:00 p.m., the door was wide open. The house was exactly as I had left it that morning. A fear I had never known overwhelmed me. I ran to the bedroomHe was lying in exactly the same position. My legs gave way. I shook him. “Daniel… Daniel, wake up…” But his body was cold.

I put my ear against his chest—nothing. No breath. No heartbeat. I screamed until I lost my voice. I held him tightly, begging him to wake up. But he was already gone. I truly believed it only on the day he was lowered into the ground.

I lost the man I truly, deeply loved—foolishly, in silence—because I chose ego instead of peace. Sometimes the smallest arguments steal from us the most precious moments. 😭
