Did you know that there is (apart from the G7, the G8, the G20 and the BRICS) a Group of 77 (G77), a coalition of poor and/or developing countries? The G-77 is designed to promote the collective economic and political interests of its members and create increased negotiating capacity at the United Nations. China, a developed country took the opportunity to offer itself “sponsor” of the G-77 ( Called “The G-77 and China”).

The G77 is the commitment of the United Nations to promote the democratisation of international relations and is an essential factor in this. It is a question of uniting all developing countries so that, despite their diversity, they can influence international decisions.

The coalition is created by 77 countries, then has grown and currently has 134 member countries. Their population represents more than 80% of the world’s population. Nevertheless, it continues to be referred to as the G77 in UN negotiations and sessions.

G-77 countries

The group was founded on 15 June 1964 by the Joint Declaration of the 77 countries at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The first important meeting took place in Algiers in 1967, where the Charter of Algiers was adopted and the foundations of permanent institutional structures were laid.

In June 2013, a summit takes place in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia, with the motto “For a new world order through good living”. The organization aims to eradicate poverty in these countries by 2030. Among the 134 member countries we have Rwanda,DRC,Burundi,Tanzania,Uganda,Niger, République Centrafricaine, Malawi, Maroc,Zambia…..in short, almost all African countries, Asian countries, and Latin America. It was India that first presided over this Organization from 1970-1971, Tanzania presided in 1997, South Africa in 2015. Cuba currently presides over it in 2023.

G77+China Summit in Cuba: a meeting to advocate for a less “unfair” world

Cuba will host from this Friday, September 15, 2023 and for two days an extraordinary summit of the G77 + China, a group formed by a hundred countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Cuban government wants to promote a less “unfair” international order when UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will be present, has indicated that he intends to address the “current development goals: the role of science, technology and innovation.

This summit comes after that of the G20 last weekend in India and that of the countries of Southeast Asia (Asean) in Jakarta (Indonesia) last week.
