Elon Musk returns to business, he will no longer be able to serve in the Trump administration

Elon Musk’s departure from Doge was a quiet one. In a tweet on Saturday, May 24, the Tesla boss announced that he was returning to his business, without officially stating that he was leaving the Trump administration. A “special government employee,” he was only allowed to serve in the US government for 130 days, until Wednesday, May 28.

This Wednesday, May 28, 2025, is officially Elon Musk’s last day at DOGE, the government efficiency department established by Donald Trump.

Elon Musk: A Weak Record at the Doge

First, Elon Musk is far from having accomplished the mission initially assigned to him: to save the US federal government $2 trillion, whose total budget reaches nearly $7 trillion.

Upon his arrival at the Doge, this goal was reduced to $1 trillion in cuts. A total that the Tesla CEO will never be able to achieve. As of Tuesday, May 27, the Doge website indicated that only $175 billion in savings had been achieved, according to its estimates.

Meanwhile, according to the New York Times, 12 percent of the 2.4 million U.S. federal employees were forced to leave their jobs (including those at the U.S. Development Agency, the Voice of America, and a large portion of the Department of Education). But many were reinstated by court order, or in some cases, because the services wouldn’t function without them.

Brutal methods?

Elon Musk achieved this meager record by resorting to brutal methods, which fueled the SpaceX boss’s growing unpopularity.

At the end of April, an Ipsos poll for ABC and the Washington Post indicated that 57% of Americans had a negative opinion of his actions.

“The budget cuts have been quite brutal, sometimes arbitrary. And that really doesn’t sit well with people in the Trump administration,” Gabriel Solans, a researcher in American civilization at Paris Cité University, told HuffPost.

In short, “Elon Musk realized that politics wasn’t easy,” commented Luc Mary, author of Elon Musk, The Man Who Invented Our Future, at the end of April, when the billionaire was already distancing himself from the Doge.

Since then, the PayPal founder has announced that he will spend “much less” money on political campaign financing. He had spent $290 million on Republicans in 2024. “If I see a reason to spend money on politics, I will, but right now I don’t have one,” he said.

Musk’s business suffered.

Elon Musk’s time in the Trump administration also impacted his business, which suffered greatly from his brutal leadership.

As the graph below shows, sales of Tesla, one of the spearheads of the Musk empire, have fallen drastically since the beginning of the year, particularly in Europe.

At the end of April, Tesla’s CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, acknowledged that the brand was experiencing “hostility,” which he said was unjustified, and “vandalism,” which were weighing on the group’s financial results, already weakened by the slowdown in the electric vehicle market. Hence the idea, as Donald Trump summarized in early May, that Elon Musk “go back to his cars.”
