We’re in New Zealand. It’s an English-speaking country. Every year, the New Zealand government publishes an annual list of banned first names. This year, we find religious terms like Saint or Bishop, royal titles like King or Prince, but also references to cannabis strains, Sativa or Indica. However, a female name, rather popular in France and other African countries, appears on this updated list. Fanny – this name is deemed offensive by the authorities.

The name Fanny is on the banned list. Why? Because in English-speaking countries, “fanny” refers to the female genitalia, but in a vulgar way. The word is considered “sexually aggressive.” According to the New Zealand Department of Home Affairs, “whether a name is offensive or not is a matter of judgment, and the potential for offensiveness evolves over time.” It therefore encourages parents “to think carefully about the choice of name.”

There is no list of authorized first names in France, and no name is officially prohibited. Parents can name their child whatever they wish and be imaginative, as long as it doesn’t cause harm. However, the French courts have ruled that names like Nutella, Titeuf, Lucifer, and Ikea are “contrary to the child’s best interests or the right of third parties to have their family name protected.” However, nothing prevents parents from naming their daughter Fanny.
