Here’s what “untreated depression” can do: in France, a depressed man killed his wife, and all his four children aged 10 years to 9 months

HAKIZIMANA Maurice

When we talk about “mental health” some people think it’s a joke. Indeed, many individuals seriously suffer from “mental illnesses” including the depression that threatens us all. If not done quickly and well-treated, this disease can do damage. The following story confirms this. A man from my region (Paris region) has just violently shot an entire family with a knife on Christmas Eve. I’ll let you read the story yourself:

A mother and her four children were found dead on Monday evening in their apartment in Meaux (Seine-et-Marne). The father of the family was arrested on Tuesday morning and placed in police custody. He suffered from “depressive and psychotic disorders”. The public prosecutor described “a crime scene of great violence”.

The victims are a 35-year-old woman and her four children: two young girls aged 10 years and 7, a 4-year-old boy and a nine-month-old baby. The father is a 33-year-old man. The three of the five are “victims of a very large number of stab wounds” all over their bodies, he added. The other victims, the two boys, “did not have any visible wounds on their bodies.”

The results of the autopsies revealed that the 35-year-old mother and her daughters, aged 10 and 7, “were victims of about ten stab wounds each”, “administered with great violence”, the prosecutor said.

It was a neighbour who raised the alarm

It was a neighbour who raised the alarm. She was waiting for the mother of the family to share the Christmas Eve dinner. When she didn’t see her coming, she tried to contact her by phone and went to knock on her door, but was unsuccessful. Later, it was the neighbor’s son who knocked on the door. There, the father of the family is said to have replied “tout le monde dort” (“everyone is sleeping”).The next day, on the evening of December 25, the neighbor returned to the door.

“I came straight to ring his doorbell. I saw blood on the front door handle, so I called the police,” she said.

The BAC (brigade anti-criminalité/ Anti-Crime Brigade) then went to the scene and tried in vain to enter the house. The windows were closed and the shutters were down. As a result, the police were forced to force their way in through the window of the matrimonial bedroom.

“Very quickly, the exploitation of surveillance videos located within the walls of this condominium and the city of Meaux made it possible to identify a male individual with a cap who had left the building at 8:08 p.m.,” the prosecutor said on Tuesday. “The collection of the testimony of the suspect’s sister made it possible to get in touch with the suspect’s father and mother, who were very cooperative,” he said.

The father of the family, the wanted one since the macabre discovery, was in the neighbouring department of Seine-Saint-Denis and was arrested at the bottom of his father’s home in Sevran. The man, who suffered a hand injury, was hospitalized in police custody. He has not yet been heard by the court but said he acknowledge that he had attacked his family. He also spoke about his malaise and depression.

The man suffers from “depressive and psychotic disorders”

Neighbours and family describe the man as “psychologically fragile”“We felt that he was not comfortable in his own skin,” a neighbor told reporters. The man had tried; in 2017, to commit suicide.

Following the acts of violence committed in 2019, a psychiatric examination of the father concluded that his condition was incompatible with police custody and he was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital.

In January 2020, he explained the facts by his dark thoughts and his desire to hurt himself. He said he didn’t want to hurt his wife, whom he loved. “The shot went off on its own,” he said in remarks reported by the prosecutor.

The judge also indicted him for an “attempted murder” of his father. According to a reliable source, the man did indeed leave his home on December 25 to go to his father’s house in Sevran (Seine-Saint-Denis) to “kill him as well”. He wanted to continue to “do harm.” The suspect’s father, who had been warned by his eldest daughter about his son’s actions, refused to open his door to him, seeing him with a knife and a bloody hand, he told reporters. Subsequently, the accused slept in the stairwell before the police arrested him and discovered the knife at his side.

“He came around 1 a.m. He was injured because he had a knife. When he knocked, I didn’t open the door,” said Ndodé, 70. He added: “He left, I called the police and he came back around 7am. I told the police to hurry because he was at the door and I wasn’t letting him in.”

He acknowledged the facts: depression and other psychotic disorders do damage

While in police custody, the father of the family admitted to being the perpetrator of the quintuple homicide after “hearing voices” asking him to “do harm”. He later told investigators that he wanted to kill his father. According to a statement from the prosecutor of the city of Seine-et-Marne released this Thursday morning, the man “did not manage to identify a trigger for his act.”

Depression meets very specific criteria set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-5). Nine symptoms are typical (Be alerted by even one of them) :

  • An almost permanent sadness, sometimes with tears
  • Loss of interest and enjoyment of activities previously considered enjoyable
  • Excessive or inappropriate feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Psychomotor slowdown
  • Tiredness (asthenia), often in the morning
  • Loss of sex and food appetite, often associated with weight loss
  • Sleep disturbances, especially morning insomnia
  • Difficulties with attention, concentration and memory

In your home, when a person suffers from depression or another pyschotic disorder, do you take care to have him/her treated as soon as possible before he/she does the irreparable or do you let him/her do it? What is the lesson to be learned from this horrific story?
