On Sunday, September 10, 2023, in the village of São Lourenco de Bairro, in central Portugal, locals woke up as usual and found themselves under real red wine, flooding their roads like a red river. Two million liters of the precious good wine ready to drink poured into their streets.

What happened?

The incident was caused by the bursting of two tanks in a distillery located on the heights of the village. In its official statement, the Levira distillery claims that there were no injuries, and apologized for the damage caused!

Damage?

Yes, the torrent of red wine caused material damage in the streets of São Lourenco. Local media outlet Diario de Coimbra reports:

“The wine flooded the road, nearby roads and grounds, and entered at least one winery”

The company says it is prepared to take “full responsibility for the costs associated with the clean-up and the repair of damages.”

Firefighters quickly intervened and a civil protection team did everything possible to “minimize the impacts,” as the distillery puts it. Thus, the river of wine was neutralized, collected, and lead to a wastewater treatment plant.

Portugal is known for its good wine, but the wine industry says it doesn’t know what to do with the excess wine. Faced with this wine crisis, the Portuguese state has provided more than 20 million euros to set up a “crisis distillation” and support the wine sector while seeking a market for the wine that flows freely in the country.
