The Statue of Liberty: 139 Years of a Universal Symbol

By Prof :HAKIZIMANA Maurice

On this Fourth of July, the national holiday of the United States, it is impossible not to think of the Statue of Liberty, one of the world’s most famous landmarks.

Inaugurated on October 28, 1886, the statue is now 139 years old. A gift from France to the American people, it symbolizes freedom, democracy, and hope for millions of people around the world.

Key Facts

Total height (from the ground to the tip of the torch): Approximately 93 meters (305 feet).

  • Age: 139 years
  • Location: Liberty Island
  • Gifted by: France to the United States to celebrate the friendship between the two nations and the centennial of American independence.
  • Sculptor: Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi
  • Internal structure: Designed by Gustave Eiffel, who would later build the Eiffel Tower.

Interestingly, in 2026, the Statue of Liberty is celebrating its 140th year of existence, as it has entered its 140th year since its inauguration in 1886.

In her right hand, she raises a torch symbolizing the light of freedom guiding humanity. In her left hand, she holds a tablet inscribed with “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI”—July 4, 1776, in Roman numerals—the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Her seven-pointed crown represents the seven continents and the seven seas, reminding us that freedom is a universal aspiration. At her feet lie broken chains, symbolizing victory over oppression and tyranny.

For nearly a century and a half, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed visitors from across the globe and remains a powerful reminder that freedom is an ideal that must be won, protected, and passed on from one generation to the next.
