Nicolas Sarkozy to Be Released from Prison

After spending three weeks in detention following his conviction for criminal association in the Libyan financing case, Nicolas Sarkozy has been granted release under judicial supervision.

The Paris Court of Appeal ruled that his pre-trial detention was not justified, noting no risk of evidence tampering or witness pressure. The former president is forbidden to leave France or contact anyone involved in the case, including the Minister of Justice.

The decision aligns with the prosecutor’s request, emphasizing that Sarkozy remains presumed innocent despite the serious charges.

Appearing visibly strained during the hearing, Sarkozy denied ever seeking money from Muammar Gaddafi, calling his imprisonment a painful ordeal while praising the humanity of prison staff.

His lawyer, Christophe Ingrain, criticized the detention conditions and argued that no valid reason justified keeping him in custody.
