France: Justice Drops Proceedings Against Agathe Kanziga Habyarimana
French investigating judges have decided to drop the charges against Agathe Kanziga Habyarimana, widow of former Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana, due to insufficient evidence.
At 82 years old, Mrs. Habyarimana had been under investigation for nearly twenty years over accusations linked to the 1994 genocide, following complaints filed by survivors’ associations and by the Collectif des parties civiles pour le Rwanda (CPCR), founded by Dafroza and Alain Gauthier.
Contacted by the BBC, her son Léon Habyarimana welcomed the ruling as a “decision received with great joy,” calling it “a new beginning” for his family’s history and, more broadly, for Rwanda’s memory.

In 2007, a coalition of associations of Rwandan origin, founded by a couple living in Reims, France—Dafroza and Alain Gauthier—well-known for tracking down those living in France suspected of involvement in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, filed a complaint against Mrs. Agathe Kanziga-Habyarimana, wife of the Rwandan president assassinated in April 1994.

According to AFP, the investigation failed to establish her involvement in the crimes. Therefore, no prosecution will be pursued.
