Robert Francis Prevost, who has earned two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s degree, and a doctorate, is considered one of the most educated religious figures worldwide.
.

His career and his journey in the Church
His career in the Church was marked by several notable roles. After his priestly ordination in 1982, Cardinal Prevost joined the Augustinian Mission in Peru in 1985 and served as Chancellor of the Territorial Prelature of Chulucanas from 1985 to 1986.

From 1987 to 1988, he lived in the United States as parish priest of vocations and director of missions for the Augustinian Province of Chicago, before returning to Peru. For the next ten years, he directed the Augustinian Seminary in Trujillo and taught canon law at the diocesan seminary, where he was also prefect of studies. He also held other positions there, including parish priest, diocesan officiant, director of formation, seminary professor, and judicial vicar.
In 1999, he returned to Chicago and was elected prior provincial of the “Mother of Good Counsel” province of the archdiocese. Two and a half years later, he was elected prior general of the Augustinian Order and served two terms until 2013.
In 2014, he returned to Peru when Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo. He was elevated to the rank of Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015. During this period, he also served as Vice President and member of the Permanent Council of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference from 2018 to 2023.

During this period, the Peruvian bishops reportedly played an important role in ensuring institutional stability during the successive political crises that led to the overthrow of successive presidents. In 2020 and 2021, Bishop Prevost served as Apostolic Administrator of Callao, Peru.
Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in January 2023, entrusting him with the selection of bishops. Later that year, on September 30, 2023, he will be elevated to the rank of cardinal.
During his first months as Prefect, Bishop Prevost remained discreetly present in the media, but he was apparently appreciated for his listening skills and his mastery of the issues. Aleteia reports that a French bishop who met him two months after taking office praised his “judicious questions” and his ability to summarize, stressing that this first contact had left him with a “good impression.”

Cardinal Prevost is a member of seven Vatican dicasteries as well as the Commission for Government (Governatorato) of Vatican City State, which demonstrates the trust that Pope Francis has placed in him and the importance he attaches to his administrative skills.
