Belgian insurer AG has calculated the cost of a child from birth to age 25. It’s a far from neutral amount. A child costs his parents €260,000 ( that is 282 808 USD or 218 933 GB Pounds) to raise and support until age 25.

The expenses taken into account include “diapers, food, leisure, sport, clothing, a mobile phone, a bicycle” or studies, notes the Belgian daily Le Soir, which relays the study.
Research Approach
Having one or more children comes at a cost that Belgian insurer AG sought to determine. Based on figures from Gezinsbond, a Belgian non-profit organization specializing in household budgets, it estimates it to be slightly lower than that of a small house in Belgium: €264,310 until the child’s 25th birthday.
To reach this conclusion, it compared the expenses of two couples, one with a child, with a similar income of €3,908.17, the average income in Belgium, over 25 years. According to its calculations, the expenses for a child amount to €800 per month, or nearly €240,000 over 25 years. This includes food, clothing, school activities, and the purchase of a cell phone and bicycle. If childcare and education costs are added, the bill climbs to €264,310 for a first child.
This cost is intended to be realistic. But it can vary from one family to another, depending on their income and lifestyle. By comparison, it would be possible to raise eight dogs with the same amount, including food and veterinary care, Le Soir reports. Or to buy a house in Belgium. The median price for a two- or three-story house is €275,000 in the third quarter of 2024, according to Belgium’s national institute Stabel.
A decreasing cost with the number of children
“In a family with more than one child, the average cost per child is slightly lower because certain expenses such as strollers, toys, and babysitting can be spread among several children,” notes AG. Nevertheless, this cost remains high (€224,000) and corresponds to that of a small house.
