Nyerere in 1975

Nyerere was a controversial figure. Across Africa he gained widespread respect as an anti-colonialist and in power received praise for ensuring that, unlike many of its neighbours, Tanzania remained stable and unified in the decades following independence. Nyerere firmly believed in egalitarianism and in creating a society of equals, referring to his desire for a “classless society”.

In campaigning for Tanganyikan independence using non-violent methods, Nyerere was inspired by the example of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.

In his view, the equality of ujamaa must come from the individual’s commitment to a just society in which all talents and abilities were used to the full. He desired a society in which the interests of the individual and society were identical and thought this could be achieved because individuals ultimately wanted to promote the common good.

He is held in deep respect in Tanzania, where he is often referred to by the Swahili honorific Mwalimu (“teacher”) and described as the “Father of the Nation”. He is a great Pan-African who depicts the uniformity of African Continent.

Refusing to run for reelection, Nyerere retired voluntarily in 1985. He was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi and served as a sort of elder statesman in Africa until his death in 1999.

According to the historian W. O. Maloba, through his writing Nyerere became “one of the most respected contributors to the expanding literature on African Socialism”.

  4. Thanks for the new stuff you have unveiled in your short article. One thing I would like to reply to is that FSBO interactions are built after a while. By bringing out yourself to owners the first saturday and sunday their FSBO is actually announced, ahead of the masses start out calling on Mon, you generate a good link. By giving them tools, educational products, free reports, and forms, you become an ally. By subtracting a personal interest in them and their scenario, you produce a solid interconnection that, in many cases, pays off once the owners decide to go with an agent they know plus trust – preferably you.

  5. That is a good tip especially to those fresh to the blogosphere. Short but very accurate information… Appreciate your sharing this one. A must read article!
