In addition to the Church’s own donations and resources, St. Peter’s Basilica was financed by the highly controversial practice of trading indulgences. The sale of indulgences consisted of promising to reduce the time spent in purgatory for those who purchased them or for the souls of their loved ones.
(2) The Catholic Church
The term refers to the global religious institution made up of over a billion followers who adhere to the teachings of Catholicism.It is led by the Pope and organized into dioceses and parishes worldwide.The Catholic Church encompasses a wide range of spiritual, charitable, and educational activities and teachings, including its sacraments, traditions, and doctrines.
In summary, the Vatican is a physical and political entity, while the Catholic Church is the religious organization and spiritual community led by the Pope.
