Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was officially appointed Prime Minister by King Charles III on Friday, along with his wife Victoria. He is now forming a government and will succeed outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street. Here are four things you need to know about Sir Keir Starmer, the new leader of the British Government.

1. Age and family

The 61-year-old former lawyer comes from a very modest family. His father was a toolmaker, his mother a nurse. They are four children, two girls and two boys including Keir Starmer. He was born and raised on the outskirts of London, in Oxted, Surrey. His father was already a member and supporter of the Labour Party when Starmer was born. His father gave him the first name of the founder of the Labour Party, Keir Hardie. Keir Starmer completed his secondary education at Reigate Grammar School, and was the first in his family to pursue higher education, law, first at the University of Leeds, then at the very prestigious University of Oxford.

“In our modest family, there were difficult times (…). I know what it means, uncontrolled inflation”….“I know how the rising cost of living can make you dread the postman. ‘Is he going to bring another bill that we can’t pay?’” – Sir Keir Starmer (Associated Press.)

2. Job and career background

After his university studies, the young Keir Starmer embarked on a career as a lawyer in 1987 and continued to specialize in human rights. He was known, in the 1980s and 1990s, in unions defending prisoners threatened with the death penalty in the Caribbean, Uganda, Kenya and Malawi. Keir Starmer is also known for having represented, in the years 1995-1999, environmental activists accused of having distributed brochures denouncing McDonald’s practices, particularly in environmental matters.

In the 2000s, Keir Starmer, a lawyer, worked as a human rights advisor on the practices of the Northern Ireland police, before becoming Director of Public Prosecutions, the equivalent of Attorney General. Keir Starmer, Prosecutor at the head of the Public Prosecution Service of England and Wales since 2008, he led, among other things, prosecutions against MPs, accused of profiting from their office expenses. He also prosecuted journalists for phone hacking cases and young people during riots in England.

3. Political career

His political career began in 2015, after almost 30 years of his career as a lawyer. He was first elected as a Labour MP in the constituency of Holborn and St. Pancras, in north London in 2015. For Brexit, Keir Starmer voted against the United Kingdom leaving the European Union and called for a second referendum. Before dismissing, in 2022, the idea of a British return to the EU. At the end of 2019, Keir Starmer was voted (for more than 50% of the votes) to replace Jeremy Corbyn as leader of Labour, a mandate starting in April 2020.

4. Is Keir Starmer a centrist?

Since 2020, Keir Starmer has moved away from the left-wing ideas of his predecessor. He advocates “seriousness”, “country first, party second” and defends a more centrist line, after 14 years of Conservative policies. His political party, Labour, has defended the fight against tax evasion, the construction of 1.5 million new homes, the recruitment of more than 6,000 teachers, the release of 40,000 additional medical appointments within the NHS and the creation of a “border security command”.

The leader’s political line is changing, Chris Ward, one of his former advisers, told the Guardian. “He has never come from or been beholden to any particular faction of the Labour Party. That is why he was able to win the leadership race by relying on the moderate left and why he is leading it today by relying on the centre-right.” With the aim “of getting closer to his goal, which is to win elections and change the country.”
