In their most common version, state lies are propaganda. Lying is consubstantial with dictatorial regimes, whether in the Third Reich or in the USSR or the People’s Republic of China. But it is also practiced by the rulers of so-called “democratic” countries with very harmful consequences because it ruins the trust that citizens have in the ruling class, makes people doubt the validity of democracy and, in turn, gives credence to conspiracy theories and the most absurd falsehoods.

Examples of State Lies and Propaganda

(1) Management of the Covid-19 epidemic

The management of the Covid-19 epidemic in the spring of 2020 was done by ministers and politicians who explained on television what stood out or what had to be explained exclusively by doctors. Two days later, the state’s lie was really set in motion through the information provided by the national weather service and relayed by the Antenne 2 presenter:

  •  “In France, the Azores anticyclone will remain powerful enough to offer a real protective barrier; it blocks all disturbances coming from the East. » 

It was the famous theory of the Chernobyl cloud stopping at the French border that took shape. We know today that this was not the case and that France was affected like its immediate neighbours.

(3) Attack on 11 March 2004 at Atosha railway station in Spain

More sordid was the Spanish government’s lie about the attack on Atocha station on 11 March 2004. On that day, several bombs killed 191 people and injured 2,000. Deeply embarrassed by his involvement in Iraq, the President of the Council, José María Aznar, blamed the crime on the Basques of ETA, although they had never carried out a mass attack and had confined themselves to targeted attacks.The investigation later led to the arrest of 29 Islamists linked to al-Qaeda… and the defeat of the Prime Minister and his party.

(4) The two atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

On August 6, 1945, President Truman announced on the radio that a new type of bomb had exploded on Hiroshima, calling the city a “military base”! The president would later justify the two atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by claiming, with the approval of all the Western media, that these tragedies would have avoided the sacrifice of a million American soldiers…American State lies.

Today we know that by dropping atomic bombs on Japan, the American leaders wanted above all to impress their ally and yet rival, the Soviet Union, in the perspective of future conflicts.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, state lying in Russia has reached a fever pitch. Distortion of reality and contempt for facts have long been Vladimir Putin’s driving forces. At the end of this list, filmed in London in November 2022 and broadcast in the form of excerpts in April 2023 on his YouTube channel, “Spoontamer”, followed by 3.4 million subscribers, the artist, who is very critical of the government and is now in exile, concludes to applause:

  • “There are so many lies that Russians are starting to believe them. Because they’re like, “Well, all of this can’t just be lies.” But yes, it’s all lies. Every one of those fucking words is one! »

State lies in times of war, more news than ever
