How I Calmed an Angry Driver on the Road: “A gentle tongue can break a bone.”

Author: HAKIZIMANA Maurice

Last Saturday, I made a mistake while driving: I cut someone off. It was an obvious fault, entirely my responsibility. He immediately honked, gave me the middle finger, and, by an unexpected coincidence, we ended up in the same parking lot a few minutes later. He was waiting for me. Middle finger raised. Shouting. Insults:— “Learn how to drive, idiot!

I stopped. I rolled down my window. I let him vent his anger without interrupting him. Then I calmly replied:— “You’re right, brother. I cut you off. I’m sorry. It was a stupid mistake. Thank you for your quick reflexes — because of you, we stayed safe.”

He froze. Still upset, but clearly unsettled. After a few seconds, all he could mutter was:— “Just be careful.”

I then walked into the shopping mall. A few minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was him — but this time, calm.— “I owe you an apology. I had a bad morning. Thank you for reminding me that everyone can make mistakes. I shouldn’t have reacted that way.

We exchanged smiles, wished each other a good day, and went our separate ways.

Lessons to Learn

  1. Owning your mistakes defuses conflict.
Admitting you’re wrong is not weakness — it’s strength.
  2. Gentleness is more powerful than confrontation.
Anger fuels anger. Calmness disarms it.
  3. Three words can change everything: “I’m sorry.”
A sincere apology often transforms tension into understanding.
  4. Behind anger, there is often hidden pain.
He was having a bad morning. We never truly know what someone else is going through.
  5. Self-control is a personal victory.
That day, the real battle was not against him, but against my own pride.

This experience reminded me of a verse from the Bible:

“By patience a commander is won over,And a gentle tongue can break a bone.”— Proverbs 25:15

Indeed, gentleness is not weakness — it is power under control.
