I Found a €50 Bill but I Couldn’t Keep It. Why?

Last Friday, while going to pick up my sons from school, I noticed a €50 bill lying in front of the school. No one saw me. My first reaction was: “What a stroke of luck!” The next one was: “What if someone was counting on it to get through the weekend?”

I thought of my mother, devastated the day she had lost her money, and of the people who had helped her. At that moment, I knew I could not keep that money.So I went back to the school to ask whether a loss had been reported. A teacher immediately replied, “Yes, a mother is looking for a €50 bill.”
She was found. She was crying: that money was supposed to feed her children until Monday. She was convinced it was gone forever.

That day, I understood one essential truth: you cannot rejoice in a stroke of luck that plunges someone else into distress.True fortune lies in having the integrity to return what does not belong to us.

“Keep praying for us,for we trust we have an honest conscience, as we wish to conduct ourselves honestly in all things”.-The Bible Hebrews 13:18.

Honesty touches many aspects of our lives, which helps us understand why the apostle Paul declared: “We desire to conduct ourselves honestly in all things.” This includes our speech, our attitude at work, family and business matters, and obedience to all obligations imposed on us by the law. — Hebrews 13:18.
