For years, the same rumor has kept coming back: Brigitte Macron is not Brigitte. Some claim she is a transgender woman.
In France, it started circulating back in 2017. But since January 2025, it has blown up in the United States. Why? Because of Candace Owens, a far-right influencer. Close to Trump, with a huge following. She turned it into videos (“Becoming Brigitte”), then a bestselling book. Result: the rumor exploded.

This time, the Macrons are saying stop. Last summer, they filed a defamation lawsuit in the United States against Candace Owens. Their lawyer, Tom Clare, confirmed it on Friday, September 19.
His message is clear: they will present “scientific” evidence that Brigitte is a cisgender woman. Experts will testify. And there will also be private photos: Brigitte pregnant, Brigitte with her children.
Not easy for the family. “It is extremely painful,” admitted the lawyer. But the couple wants “to put an end to these lies once and for all.”
In France, two women (Natacha Rey and Amandine Roy) had already been convicted in 2024 for spreading the same theory. They lost at first instance, but were acquitted on appeal this summer. The case is now before the Court of Cassation.
Yes—between Paris and Washington, the presidential couple is fighting the battle. This time, with evidence in hand.

BRIEF
- On July 23, Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron filed a lawsuit in the United States against Candace Owens, a far-right influencer who for months has been pushing the rumor that Brigitte was born male.
- Their American lawyer, Tom Clare, says they will present expert testimony and “scientific” evidence to prove these claims are false. He calls it “terribly distressing” for the family, but also announces they will seek “exemplary” damages to discourage similar defamatory campaigns.
- Meanwhile in France, Brigitte Macron is pursuing her own legal battles: a cassation appeal after the acquittal of Natacha Rey and Amandine Roy, and a new lawsuit for cyber-harassment against about ten individuals.

And you?
What do you think of this rumor that destroys reputations?
