In a historic shift, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine. In a message posted on his social media accounts, Macron declared:
“True to its longstanding commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine. I will make this solemn announcement at the United Nations General Assembly this September.”
The General Assembly is scheduled to convene between September 9 and 23.
France’s move comes as more than 140 countries—at least 142, according to AFP—have already extended recognition to a Palestinian state. Macron also revealed that he had sent a letter to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, reaffirming his determination to advance the peace process. A photo of the letter was published on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
“In light of the commitments made to me by President Abbas, I wrote to express my determination to move forward,” Macron stated. “Peace is possible. It is time to build the State of Palestine, ensure its viability, and enable it—through demilitarization and full recognition of Israel—to contribute to the security of all in the region. There is no alternative.”

France and Saudi Arabia are also set to co-chair an international summit at the head-of-state level aimed at reviving the long-stalled two-state solution. Originally planned for June, the summit was postponed due to escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Ahead of the September General Assembly, a ministerial-level meeting will take place in New York on July 28–29.
Despite global momentum, key players such as the United States and Israel remain staunchly opposed to recognizing Palestinian statehood.
President Macron emphasized that the immediate priority must be to end the war in Gaza and deliver humanitarian relief to the civilian population. However, he insisted that long-term peace hinges on the creation of a viable, demilitarized Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel.

“By taking this step,” Macron wrote in his letter to Abbas, “France aims to make a decisive contribution to peace in the Middle East and will work to rally its international partners who wish to join this effort.”
