Relations betwen Algeria and France are deteriorating: what is the trigger element?

Written by HAKIZIMANA Maurice

Algeria expelled 12 staff from the French embassy in Algiers, and France, in turn, claimed that its ambassador no longer had any work to do there, recalled its ambassador! France also says that, as a matter of reciprocity, it will expel the staff of the Algerian embassy in Paris!

What is the trigger element ?

On April 29, 2024, staff members of the Algerian Embassy in Paris (who presented themselves as French police officers) kidnapped an Algerian dissident named Amir Boukhors, well-known on social media, from his home and took him to an unknown location!

A police and gendarmerie investigation led to the arrest of several embassy employees, and one of them, an employee of the Algerian Embassy in Paris, was arrested and prosecuted! This sparked great anger in their country!

France asserts that no embassy employee should commit terrorist acts in the country where they work; that this is contrary to the international conventions that govern them and must not be tolerated.
