This Tuesday 27.01.25, demonstrations in Kinshasa, the Congolese capital, were marked by violence and extensive damage. An angry crowd attacked the embassies of countries accused of supporting Rwanda. The demonstrations took place after the M23 rebels, supported by Kigali, took control of a large part of the city of Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu. The representations of Belgium, France, the United States, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda were targeted and sometimes set on fire.

The Congolese Minister of Communication, Patrick Muyaya, condemned the acts of vandalism and looting that accompanied this demonstration.

“On the diplomatic front, we are right. But be careful, our enemies are capable of infiltrating you to attack the various embassies. I forbid you… We are working on the instructions of the President of the Republic and are demonstrating our discontent peacefully,” he declared.

For his part, Dieudonné Mushagakusa, from the panel of experts of civil society of the DRC, believes that the acts of looting and arson recorded risk deteriorating relations between Kinshasa and its international partners.

“It is regrettable that we have reached such a situation. It risks alienating the friends of the DRC who should be accompanying us in this fight to restore peace and establish territorial integrity,” he told DW.

“If we rely on international opinion, it will do nothing. So we, as a population, want to take charge of ourselves so that we can turn the enemy back,” assures one of the demonstrators. “We are in the streets to show everyone that we are unhappy with what has just happened in Goma,” explains another young man.
