
Intense fighting continued in Goma on the evening of Monday, January 27, where the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by the Wazalendo self-defense forces, put up fierce resistance to the advance of elements of the M23, an armed group reportedly supported by the Rwandan army.

According to reports from local residents, the FARDC have regained control of the Congolese national radio and television station (RTNC), which had been occupied by the rebels earlier in the day. The recapture of this strategic infrastructure is seen as a major victory for the loyalist forces, both militarily and in terms of information control.

The fighting is concentrated around several areas, particularly in the vicinity of the RTNC where the FARDC continues to fight against the rebels. Heavy gunfire has also been reported in the airport area, where the situation remains particularly tense. In the chaotic context of the fighting, crowds of civilians have been reported looting property in the vicinity of the airport and in other districts of the capital of North Kivu province.
