(1) Lutetia

It is the oldest of the names of Paris. The Romans called Lutetia Parisiorum the Gallo-Roman city known today as Paris. The inhabitants of Lutetia Parisiorum (or Frenchized Lutèce) were called the “civitas Parisiorum” or “urbs Parisiorum”. It was around 310 AD that Lutetia took the name of Paris, by abbreviation of the Latin words “civitas Parisiorum” or “urbs Parisiorum” from the name of the Gallic people who had occupied the site since the third century BC. Paname is a slang name given to Paris from the twentieth century (more precisely from the end of the First World War). In his Dictionnaire de l’argot, Jean-Paul Colin gives the etymology of Paname (or Panam): “enormous city”.
