The United States has just designated Kenya as a “major non-NATO ally”. Thus, this East African country becomes the very first in sub-Saharan Africa to enter the league. This announcement was made during William Ruto’s official visit to Washington. William Ruto est un président Kényan en exercice.

A Major non-NATO ally (MNNA) is a designation given by the United States government to countries that have strategic working relationships with the U.S. Armed Forces while not being members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). While the status does not automatically constitute a mutual defense pact (as would be the case through NATO membership) with the United States, it does confer a variety of military and financial advantages that are otherwise unobtainable by non-NATO countries.

Kenya’s new designation will allow Nairobi to strengthen its security cooperation with Washington and acquire more sophisticated American weaponry. President Joe Biden stressed that this measure was part of a “multi-year collaboration”, during a joint press conference with William Ruto at the White House.

NATO is the world’s largest military alliance with member states such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Italy. Biden welcomed President Ruto back on Thursday, May 23, 2024, in the Oval Office, followed by a joint press conference and state dinner. Prior to the deployment of Kenyan police officers to war-torn Haiti, the U.S. government granted Kenya access to ammunition, rifles and armored cars from the Pentagon. U.S. security agencies also announced that they had prepared a base in Haiti from which Kenyan police would operate.

A few African heads of state had access to the Oval Office, such as Felix Tshisekedi and Ali Bongo, but at least William Ruto of Kenya was the only one to occupy the chair of the powerful president of the United States, for a pose of the month. He is very proud of it.
