We are in ancient Rome, the first day of May coincided with the floralies, festivals that were celebrated in honor of Flora, the goddess of spring and flowers. It was the occasion for songs, dances and flowery processions. Roman prostitutes particularly enjoyed these festivals, as they considered Flora to be their patron goddess.

When the Romans conquered other countries, they brought their customs. However, in the Celtic countries, they discovered that on the first day of May a festival was already taking place, Beltaine. The night before, in other words, at the beginning of the Celtic day, all the fires were extinguished. Then, when the sun rose, people would light fires on the hills or under the sacred trees, to welcome summer and the renewal of life.T he flocks were brought out and the gods were implored to protect them.

It was not long before the floralies and Beltaine mingled to form a single festival, that of the 1st of May.

Among German-speaking and Scandinavian peoples, Walpurgis was the equivalent of Beltaine. The festivities began on Walpurgis night with the lighting of fires that were supposed to ward off witches and evil spirits. Other European peoples developed their own May Day celebrations, many of which still exist.

The Catholic Church had little control over these pagan festivities. “May Day, or Beltaine, was the most permissive day in the calendar, a holiday that neither the Christian Church nor other authorities could ever really control,” the British newspaper The Guardian observed.

The 1st of May and its customs

In the Middle Ages, new customs had been added to what was then the favorite feast day of the English. Men and women spent the night in the forest picking flowers and budding twigs to “welcome May” at sunrise. It was the occasion for many outbursts of immorality, as the pamphlet Anatomy of Abuses, by the Puritan Philip Stubbes, points out. The maypole tree was erected in the centre of the village, around which they ended up dancing and having fun all day long. Stubbes calls this tree a “stinking idol.” People chose a May queen, and often also a May king, to preside over the festivities. Other European countries also had their maypoles and mayqueens.

What was the significance of these practices? “Originally,” explains the Encyclopædia Britannica, “such rites were intended to ensure the fertility of crops and, by extension, the fertility of livestock and human beings; But, in most cases, this meaning has been lost and the practices have survived in the form of simple popular festivals. “

Sometimes accepted, sometimes reprobated

The Protestant reformers tried to put an end to this festival, which they considered pagan. In 1555, Calvinist Scotland banned the celebration of May Day. In 1644, the Puritanical English Parliament outlawed the maypole. Under the Protectorate regime, when England was without a king, the “licentious practices” of May Day were condemned. But maypoles reappeared with the re-establishment of the monarchy in 1660.

The maypole gradually lost its popularity in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Then he experienced a revival of enthusiasm, but under a more moral guise. Many of the customs traditionally associated with May Day, such as children dancing around the maypole and waving brightly colored ribbons, date from this more recent era. However, folklorists who look into the more distant origins of this festival discover many roots.

European emigrants brought their customs to other countries, and some of their descendants still celebrate May Day according to ancient tradition. However, in many countries, May 1, or the first Monday after May Day, is simply a public holiday.

May 1st becomes Labour Day

The parades and demonstrations taking place today, May 1st, have begun in North America. Why here? With the new machines of the Industrial Revolution running continuously, factory owners often asked their workers to work no less than 16 hours a day, with the exception of Sundays. Anxious to improve the lives of workers, a federation of American and Canadian trade unions demanded an eight-hour workday effective 1 May 1886. Most employers refused. Thousands of workers went on strike that day.After the first martyrs of the labor movement perished in the Haymarket Square riot in Chicago, Illinois, workers from England, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia joined the movement.

In 1889, in Paris, the Congress of the Socialist International announced that May 1, 1890, would be a day of international demonstrations in favor of the eight-hour day. Subsequently, this day of the year became an opportunity for workers to present their demands in terms of working conditions.

In the republic of the Soviet Union, May Day was celebrated with military parades and a grand display of advanced technological achievements. Today, in many countries, May 1st is a public holiday called Labor Day or International Workers’ Day.

Similarities with the past

May 1st has always been the people’s day. The workers were unemployed, with or without the consent of their employers. Social roles were reversed. The king and queen of the day were chosen from among the people, and the ruling classes were often mocked. As a result, May Day was quickly associated with workers’ movements and became, before the beginning of the twentieth century, an integral part of the socialist calendar.

As in the past, International Workers’ Day is an occasion for parades in the streets. But in recent years, it has also been characterized by acts of violence. On May 1, 2000, for example, fights, injuries and vandalism tarnished rallies organized everywhere against globalist capitalism.
