HIV/AIDS: “Undetectable,” a Word That Changes Everything

Prof HAKIZIMANA Maurice

“Undetectable” is a word everyone should know when talking about HIV today. A person living with HIV who takes their antiretroviral treatment correctly can achieve an undetectable viral load. This means that the amount of virus in their blood has become so low that laboratory tests can no longer detect it.

But most importantly, when this viral load is kept undetectable through treatment, the person does not transmit HIV to their sexual partner. This principle is now summarized by three letters: U = U, “Undetectable = Untransmittable.”

This message is essential in the fight against stigma and prejudice. A person living with HIV who is on effective treatment can have a normal emotional and sexual life, have an HIV-negative partner, and build a family.

However, “undetectable” does not mean “cured.” The virus remains in the body, and treatment must be continued according to medical advice. Viral load must also be monitored regularly by healthcare professionals.

Another important point: HIV treatment does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms can therefore still be useful for protecting against them.

Key takeaway
UNDETECTABLE = UNTRANSMITTABLE
When a person living with HIV takes their treatment and maintains an undetectable viral load, they do not transmit HIV through sexual contact.
The word to remember today: UNDETECTABLE.

The red ribbon is not upside down by accident — it tells the story of how attitudes toward HIV have evolved.

The historic symbol of HIV is the red ribbon. Its shape is notably reminiscent of an inverted V, associated with the idea of victory — a victory that would one day be achieved when AIDS was defeated.

Yes, it is time to look at HIV from a new perspective. We have moved from:

HIV = fear → HIV = treatment → HIV = undetectable → HIV = untransmittable.

Conclusion

A person can be HIV-positive and have sex without a condom with an HIV-negative partner, and have children without transmitting HIV, provided that they take their treatment correctly and that healthcare professionals confirm that their viral load has become undetectable and remains so. Good news, isn’t it?

Class dismissed!
