“Kenya,Rwanda and Uganda have become the main hubs for gold smuggling in the region”-SwissAid Report
Kenya Rwanda and Uganda have become major hubs for gold smuggling from neighboring countries such as South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a SwissAid report.
Most of the gold smuggled through KENYA is shipped to Dubai, with India and South Africa also serving as key destinations.
The SwissAid report said: “Some of the gold is stolen from South Sudan, some from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and to a lesser extent, from Ethiopia and Sudan, passing through Kenya before being re-exported abroad.”
The report highlights a significant discrepancy in Kenya’s gold export figures: while the government reported 672 kilograms in 2023, SwissAid estimates the actual amount to be closer to two tons annually.
