In the Bible,Genesis 9:20-27 we read:

20 Now Noah started off as a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. 21 When he drank of the wine, he became intoxicated, and he uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Caʹnaan, saw his father’s nakedness, and he told his two brothers outside. 23 So Shem and Jaʹpheth took a garment and put it upon both their shoulders and walked in backward. Thus they covered their father’s nakedness while their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah woke up from his wine and learned what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said: “Cursed be Caʹnaan.+Let him become the lowest slave to his brothers.”+26 And he added: “Praised be Jehovah, the God of Shem,And let Caʹnaan become a slave to him.+27 Let God grant ample space to Jaʹpheth,And let him reside in the tents of Shem.Let Caʹnaan become a slave to him also.”

In this story, Ham was involved in an incident that earned his son Canaan a curse. Noah had gotten drunk on wine and discovered himself in his tent. Ham saw his father’s nakedness, but instead of showing respect for Noah, the head of the family, servant, and prophet whom God had used to preserve the human race, Ham told his two brothers what he had seen.

Shem and Japheth showed due respect for their father by entering backwards with a cloak to cover him, so as not to dishonor him by looking at his nakedness. When Noah wakes up, he curses not Ham, but Canaan, the son of Ham. In the blessing he then gave to Shem, which included a blessing for Japheth, he ignored Ham; he mentioned only Canaan to curse him and prophetically announce that he would become a slave of Shem and Japheth.

How to understand this story?

It was Ham, the father of Canaan, who saw the nakedness of his father and told it to his two brothers, who were outside, why then when he awoke, Noah cursed not Ham, but Canaan, the son of Ham.

It may be that Canaan himself was directly involved in the incident and that his father, Ham, did not correct it. In all likelihood, Canaan had engaged in a perverse act on the person of Noah, his grandfather, and Ham had witnessed it.

That the phrase “experiences one’s father’s nakedness” may imply an immoral or perverse act on the part of Canaan is a reasonable inference. Indeed, in most cases where the Bible speaks of “discovering” or “seeing the nakedness” of someone, it refers to incest or other sexual sins (Lev 18:6-19; 20:17). It is therefore possible that Canaan committed or attempted to commit some shameful act on the person of Noah then unconscious, and that Ham, son of Noah knowing this, instead of intervening, apparently hastened to tell around him what had happened, while Shem and Japheth, for their part, did what was necessary to cover their father. As a result, they were blessed.

Canaan, who was presumably the culprit, was cursed, while Ham, who had seen and narrated the scene, suffered the repercussions of the shame that his offspring attracted. Scripture does not describe this event in great detail.

A prophecy that had its realization

The curse was realized in part when the Israelites, Semites, subdued the Canaanites. Those who were not destroyed (e.g. the Gibeonites [see Joshua chapter 9]) became slaves of Israel. Centuries later, the curse continued to be fulfilled when the descendants of Canaan, son of Ham, were subjugated by the Japhetic world powers of the Medo-Persian Empire, Greece and Rome.

Misinterpretation: the descendants of Canaan, the one who was cursed, were not black.

Some have falsely claimed that the black race and the enslavement of representatives of this race resulted from the curse pronounced on Canaan. In reality, the descendants of Canaan, the one who was cursed, were not black. The blacks are descended from Kush and Put, other sons of Ham who were not involved in the incident or cursed.
