L’ “ICON OF THE SEA” -“L’Icône des mers” aura sept piscines, quinze bars et restaurants, un parc aquatique et une patinoire. Sans doute le plus grand bateau de croisière au monde. Le premier voyage est prévu en janvier 2024.Beaucoup réservent déjà leurs billets.

Un billet à 94.000 dollars

Selon les cabines choisies, les prix sur le site vont actuellement de 1000 à 40.000 euros par personne. Un responsable de l’entreprise a déclaré début novembre au média américain Travel Weekly qu’un billet s’était vendu 94.000 dollars (un peu plus de 94.000 euros)

C’est le plus grand bateau de croisière au monde selon ses constructeurs. Ce bateau géant a vu le jour sur le chantier naval de Turku en Finlande, malgré les accusations de monstruosité anti-écologique. D’un tonnage brut de 250.800 tonnes, soit cinq fois la taille du Titanic, il peut transporter près de 10.000 personnes (dont 7600 passagers) et sillonnera bientôt les Caraïbes en partance de Miami.

“Ce navire est à ce jour, d’après nos informations, le plus grand navire de croisière au monde”– Tim Meyer, PDG du constructeur naval Meyer Turku.

Selon Alexis Papathanassis, “les navires de grande taille présentent des avantages économiques évidents” car ils réduisent le coût que présente chaque passager en faisant des économies d’échelle.

“Plus grands que jamais”

Si l’on suivait une logique décroissante, “nous construirions certes des bateaux de croisière plus grands, mais en moins grand nombre”, critique Constance Dijkstra, spécialiste du transport maritime au sein de l’ONG Transport & Environment (T&E). “Mais ce n’est pas ce qui se passe. Nous voyons de plus en plus de navires, et ils sont plus grands que jamais”, avance-t-elle. Et bien que les paquebots modernes prennent des mesures pour atténuer les émissions grâce à la technologie – “l’Icon of the Seas” carbure au gaz naturel liquéfié (GNL)– les écologistes ne sont pas convaincus.

Ce gaz émet moins que les combustibles marins traditionnels, mais “il a des conséquences dramatiques sur le climat à cause des fuites de méthane” qu’il suscite, alerte Constance Dijkstra. Le GNL, composé essentiellement de méthane, est un puissant gaz à effet de serre qui peut avoir un impact bien pire sur le climat que le dioxyde de carbone. “Le problème, c’est qu’en utilisant le GNL comme carburant marin, on encourage le développement de l’industrie gazière”, insiste-t-elle.

D’autres défis se posent encore avec l’émergence de ces bateaux XXL, comme le surpeuplement des ports et le manque d’infrastructures pour gérer l’affluence. Et en cherchant à augmenter leur capacité d’accueil de passagers, les compagnies de croisière ont tendance à réduire la taille de l’équipage. Ce qui peut poser problème, surtout en cas d’urgence. “Il est plus difficile d’assurer l’évacuation sur les grands navires”, s’inquiète Alexis Papathanassis.
